A leader once said, “Give me 1,000 people and I will build a church. Give me 12 disciples and I will change the world.” Twelve dedicated men who were literally called away from their day jobs changed the world. Twelve often insecure men who were trained to take their position to do what was asked of them. Jesus was the One who called these men and Jesus was the One who trained these men. As a result, they have left an indelible impression. They have, sometimes literally, written history…
What if the Dutch football team were to participate in a major global tournament with high-quality players, but positioned in a random position on the field. A lightning-fast winger like Arjen Robben in goal or Edwin van der Sar positioned as a midfielder. You have absolute top players on the line, but if you deploy players in this way, you look like a poor figure as a team. The only exception may be Dirk Kuijt, who, according to Louis van Gaal, could play in almost any position during the 2014 World Cup.
The Netherlandsnot the same anymore
What if those 1000 people from the quote I quoted above are the million Christians who currently form the church in the Netherlands. What if all these Christians found their calling and, through the power of the Holy Spirit, started doing what they were created to do. What would happen then? When I try to answer that question for myself, I notice that it is beyond my imagination. What I do know is that the Netherlands will no longer be the same.
What if everyone in your church has discovered what his or her calling is and that through God’s power they are flourishing in the place God intended for them. What would happen in your church and in your village or city? Would it be naive to think that in that case the local church, without too many rules and meetings, would function like a well-oiled machine?
What if you?
What if you discover how unique God has made you, see how He has led your life and what destiny He has for you. How joyful and happy will you be when you feel in every fiber of your being that what you are doing in the Kingdom of God is exactly what you were made to do?
What if I?
What if I had not appreciated God’s loving direction in my life and missed what God designed for me to walk in. Then I would never have tasted what it is like to move along with what God is doing in and through my ministry.
At Royal Mission’s Full-time and Part-time School, I enjoy helping students discover, together with God, their calling and destiny. The adventure and joy that comes with it is wonderful to see. Sometimes it becomes clear through a lesson or a (coaching) conversation and it is a process. Other times, God’s call comes upon a student’s life with an impact unprecedented through an encounter with brokenness during an outreach.
I am bursting with motivation and inspiration to write a book about calling and destiny. I’m in the middle of the writing process now and I would love it if people who love Jesus were helped to walk in their unique destiny. As a first step, I will soon give a (free) growth course on this theme. Welcome!
