The same Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 But to each one is given the revelation of the Spirit for what is useful for another (………) 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributes as He pleases.

Last weekend it was time again for the roughest teenage weekend in the Netherlands: Royala dventureW ekend. A weekend full of high-quality activities and profound encounters. I was allowed to speak at the opening service. And honest; I haven’t been this tense in years. Speaking for adults is okay, but for teenagers it is still a bit scary. I sent to my wife Anne just before the service started: ‘The expectations are so high here and I feel that I really cannot meet this in natural strength. I really hope I heard it correctly and that the words are flowing again.

The worship started and I noticed that the tension was almost too much for me. I decided to ask God if He would give a prophetic word to one of the young people (getting out in prophetic words calms me down). At the back of the room I looked at the backs of the teenagers in worship. I prayed: ‘Lord, highlight a young person to whom I can go and share something prophetic, touch my belly with Your love for one of these beautiful people.’ Suddenly a boy caught my eye and I felt God’s love inside me.

Willem Jan
I approached the boy and told him that I was moved by God to pray for him. We have a short conversation and before I pray for him I ask him what his name is. He says his name is Willem Jan (a fictitious name for privacy reasons). The boy sees that I am moved when he says his name and I share with him that the afternoon before, in preparation for my sermon, I prayed for some words of revelation. One of the words that came so clearly to my mind was, you may have guessed it: the name Willem Jan. His name was noted in my notes.

Prophetic word
The prophetic word I had for the boy was so spot on that he said: ‘I don’t actually know if I believe in prophecy, but everything you say is completely correct!’
What a beautiful God we serve. He encouraged me and Willem Jan and that gave me the push I needed for that evening. It was a wonderful service full of revelation, power, liberation and love!

This weekend we celebrate Pentecost together. It’s not Pentecost but we celebrate it. Fortunately, because of Easter, it can be Pentecost every day. Yet it is very nice to pay extra attention to this precious gift from the Father and Jesus: the Holy Spirit. Hidden in the story I just shared with you is the beautiful double action of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes into us for our own sake and He comeson us with his power for the benefit of the people around us and the building of God’s Kingdom on earth! He comes into you to make God’s word alive in you, to lead you into intimacy with the Father and to reveal to you who you are in Christ. In addition, the Holy Spirit wants to come upon you with His power to lead you in life as Jesus on this earth. Jesus was completely dependent on the Holy Spirit. The life of Jesus is a direct invitation to the life you are called to live!

The same Spirit
In the Bible passage at the top of this blog, Paul emphasizes the fact that it is one and the same Spirit who wants to do miracles through us. By each and every one of us. The gifts of the Spirit are available to every believer and are for such a time as this. In Paul’s day, people had to call on a different spirit in every aspect of their lives. Fortunately, we know better through the Word; it is one and the same Spirit that we may invoke. The Spirit of Yahweh and Jesus Christ. It requires a collaboration and relationship with the Holy Spirit. Do you dare to take on this adventure? I would like to encourage you to reflect on that precious treasure again this coming weekend. How do you build that relationship with the Holy Spirit? It is an age-old prayer but so simple: ‘Come Holy Spirit’.
