Open book

I intend to write a book. I have been working on it for a while now and I must say that I find it quite difficult. I have discovered that writing and speaking a sermon or a Bible study is very different from writing a book. I thought it might be a good idea to enlist you as readers of this blog to help and inspire me. I realize that I am putting pressure on myself, but that may be a good thing. Before I engage you, I would first like to tell you something about my process in order to clarify where I need your help. Where shall I begin? Writing a book is not something you just do. Why should I write a book? What should I write that hasn’t already been written in a book or hasn’t been said yet? After all, Ecclesiastes says there is nothing new under the sun? Moreover, what motives lie behind this for me? Is it really true that I want to write this book to make the world a better place? Can I really claim that my only motive is to help Christians, change churches and hasten the great revival in the country? I wish I could say a resounding ‘yes’ to all these questions. I can tell myself that it is so and I can proclaim it as such to others, but it is not so… I have decided to write a book about intimacy with God. I will write passionately about this topic, because I know how important it is to explain it and because I see that there are many Christians who struggle with their relationship and time with God. Yet there are also other ‘voices’ there. These are ‘voices’ that everyone has, but that I am ashamed of. Those other ‘voices’ are about not wanting to disappoint people. There are people around me who expect a book from me. It’s also about receiving honor. Wouldn’t it be great if I could write a book to my credit? It’s about performance. Performing for others and especially performing for God. How pleased He will be with me when I finish that book. This conflict, in which I struggle with all these motives, makes it difficult for me to write a book at all. I describe this inner struggle because it is an important part of what I want to explain in that book. It has everything to do with what is needed to build an intimate relationship with God. To experience intimacy with God, it is necessary to get to know Him, but especially to be confronted with ourselves. It is necessary to learn to be open, honest and transparent with ourselves and God. The book will therefore be much more than tips and tricks to improve your quiet time. It is not a matter of patching up your time with God in seven steps. It will be a reflection on who we are before God. How we may approach Him and what it takes to do this with a longing and sincere heart. The book is therefore not intended to gain more knowledge or to gain new and interesting insights. Deep down, I sometimes want it not to be a nice book at all, but to confront and challenge. In the book and in this blog I do not want to spare myself. It is also my own search for more of Jesus in my life. It’s easy to write about glorious victories from my past. It’s less fun to push myself to share struggles in the now. Would you dare to help me by sharing below what you are facing in your relationship with God? That’s what it starts with, telling the honest story. Maybe it is good to learn that, to dare to be vulnerable by sharing your heart. Not only would it help me further in my book, but I think the church needs to live royally in this way. For now I’d like to be inspired…
