Relaxing is not that easy. For some, the hectic life during the holiday period remains palpable in the head or body for a long time. For others, it is effortless to switch to silence and little activity.
Yet finding true peace is not always easy. I personally find it difficult to really let go of my work at Royal Mission. During the holidays I often keep track of my email, respond to texts and if someone calls who I suspect really needs me, I often answer. Not entirely convenient, you might say, and you’re probably right. That’s why I’m going to do things differently this summer during our holiday on Texel…
Why? Not only because of the peace, but because I discovered the principle a long time ago that God speaks to me more easily when I am at peace. Actually it’s the other way around, I can listen better when I really relax. I think this also applies to you as a reader. For people who are busy and preoccupied with life, but also for people who have a lot of silence in their lives and perhaps therefore forget to really listen and find peace with God.
Dare to listen
God speaks constantly, and directs our lives if we ask Him. But we can learn to get into the listening mode and understand His loving speech. I pray that God will speak to you this summer season and that you will recognize and hear His voice. My advice is: seek peace and quiet. Go for a walk, cycle, sit in nature and get quiet. Ask Him the questions in your heart and listen.
Give yourself time
Sometimes a moment is enough, sometimes you can really learn to wait. Sometimes He speaks with a voice in your mind, and sometimes through a picture or situation. If you pay attention, you may notice that He answers. Know that God sees you, loves you and wants to speak to you. Deal with it in a relaxed manner. Give yourself time to practice listening.
James 4:8a Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
