God’s living room

It is sometimes annoying when things don’t turn out the way you planned, but it can ultimately lead to something very special. This week painters are busy getting the Royal Mission building neatly painted again. A negative consequence of this is that the classroom is not available when I want to teach there. I try to start the lesson in the living room, but that is quite difficult. I look outside and see that the weather is beautiful. I suggest we go to the forest and continue the lesson there. We are going to one of my favorite places, the Duurswouder Heide near Wijnjewoude. We drive in convoy to the beautiful nature reserve. There is a lot of unrest and I therefore challenge the students to walk in silence to a place where I will be teaching. Once there, I explain something based on Psalm 131. In this Psalm, David tells us that he has calmed his soul because he chooses not to be proud and not to grasp anything that is too big or too high for him. His soul is then like a baby that has just drunk and is still intoxicated in its mother’s arms. Trusting God is the key. I then send the students into the nature reserve alone for more than an hour with assignments that help them to consciously walk around God’s living room (that’s what I like to call my favorite walking place). Letting go of the ‘big’ and seeing small details in order to walk with Jesus in the now. Afterwards I ask a number of students how they experienced it. Remarkable to hear how much (supernatural) peace this has given them. One event stands out for me. A student begins her story with something that happened one evening last week. There was a worship moment and during that evening there was a fellow student who had an ‘image’ for her. He saw her walking in the woods. There was a ray of light in the forest and the student told her that God wanted to meet her there. She thought it was a nice word at the time, but couldn’t quite place it. Until today! While she is walking along a path, she sees a beam of (sun)light falling on the ground deeper in the forest. She becomes convinced that God is telling her that He wants to meet her there. However, getting there is a challenge. Between her and the beam of light are treacherous potholes and dense vegetation. So it takes a while for her to get there, but eventually she is in the strip of light. She experiences deep peace and tranquility there… God sometimes does unexpected things to create a special encounter with us. It sometimes takes some effort and it sometimes seems cumbersome, but if you pay attention to it, you will see that there is a passion and a desire from God himself behind it. The more I experience this in my life and see it happening around me in others, the greater the urge to tell people about it and help them experience it too. That is also the ‘drive’ behind the book ‘In search of intimacy with God’ that I wrote. I really want people to experience that they were made to be in God’s presence. That sometimes takes practice and being in places where you are encouraged to seek God. That is why there will be a mini-conference, an inspiration weekend, based on the book on November 16 and 17. In a small intimate setting, helping each other grow in our relationship with God. I am convinced that God lets His light shine there! https://www.royalmission.nl/inspiratieweekenden/ https://www.royalmission.nl/shop/boeken/op-zoek-naar-intimiteit-met-god/
