God or mammon, it’s still difficult!

In the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus utters the most famous text about the Kingdom of God: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Almost every Christian knows these words and has probably sung Revival Song 40. The royal search is Jesus’ conclusion after a story about the vital choice between God and mammon. ‘You cannot serve God and mammon’ (Matthew 6:24). Of course every Christian wants to serve God and certainly not submit to mammon. Yet it turns out not to be that simple and the practice is a lot more difficult than we let ourselves believe.

In recent months, money has had a very visible place in my life. It started in September with a blog ‘What soil are you sowing in’ , followed bythe wonderful journey that we made around the new training center in Veenendaal. During that period I visited very wealthy people. Some are even in the Quote. The amounts we talked about, the turnover and the value of their companies or the properties they own, often made a big impression on me. I had to deal with that consciously!

Mammon is the god of money and symbolizes the pursuit of profit, greed and selfishness. It is not so much about wealth, but about the influence that the love of money has. That is completely separate from the amount of money you have. Rich and poor have to deal with it. Mammon is a power, a dictator and an oppressor that you must deliberately and with full effort get rid of in your life. How do you do that? Paul gives us advice that also applies here. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). You overcome the love of money by giving money away!

Recently, Royal Mission was accused from an unexpected source that we are only about money. It was quite funny that during that period we had given away € 25,000 to a fund for youth work in the PKN. Yet it has personally made me think again about the power of money in my life and in our ministry. I want to do everything I can to be under God’s government and not be manipulated sideways by mammon. Keep giving away and trust that God will provide. And He does, because He gave us 1 million Euros in 2 weeks for a new building . The English then say: ‘You can’t outgive God!’

This month, the leader of a young foundation transferred €5,000 for our new building. He actually needs the money himself. Giving away so much as a young ministry is a huge step. Yet he does it, because he knows that giving makes room for blessing. This is how he lives and his stories about God’s provision are impressive. This is how God’s Kingdom works, these are the laws when you are under God’s government. Despite his young age, he touched me and made it clear again that mammon bothers me more than I realize.

Fortunately, I’m growing too. During January’s Miraculous Sunday, I prayed for a man and God revealed to me his financial need. A little later I got the impression that God was asking me to give him money. Through this whole process surrounding finances, I didn’t hesitate for a moment, grabbed all the money notes I found in my wallet and gave them to him. He was blessed and I was even more blessed!

Let us be known as givers in all things. In this way we escape the effect of mammon and God can provide for our needs, as He has promised.

‘Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing, will be added to you” (Luke 6:38)
