On Monday evenings, Anne and I always sit on the couch with a cup of tea, cappuccino and chocolate. One of our favorite programs on TV is ‘Buy without watching’. In a last attempt to obtain a house in the overheated housing market, the participating couples give presenter Martijn Krabbé and his team permission to find, buy and renovate a house for them. A house that they do not see before the purchase agreement is signed. The couples completely surrender themselves to real estate agent Alex, architect Bob and interior stylist Roos. After they have signed the contract, they are driven blindfolded in a car to their newly purchased house. The first sight is often disastrous. ”What have we gotten ourselves into!?” and ”If I had known this…” or ”I would never have said yes to this myself” are frequently heard exclamations in this program. However, there is no way back, which often leads to sleepless nights and anxiously awaiting the result of their step in complete surrender.
In the Bible we also find a principle such as ‘Buy without looking’. The word used for this in Hebrew is: ‘ hineni’ .Isaiah 6:8: Then I heard the voice of the Lord. He said, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Behold, here I am; send me.” Isaiah answered God’s call with ‘hineni ‘ which is translated as:Behold, here I am, send me.Hineni is a dangerous word. It is a covenant word. It is a commitment of availability and complete surrender. In the NIV translation it is translated as just ‘I listen’. However, this is only a half-truth.Hineni means: I listen, but after this there is no way back, I will certainly do what you ask of me. God is looking for people who connect with Him in this way. Without conditions, complete surrender, whatever it costs you. As with ‘Buy without looking’, the appearance at first glance is disastrous. It requires dying to yourself. Abraham says ‘hineni ‘ (Genesis 22:1) Before God asks him to sacrifice Isaac, Moses says ‘hineni ‘ (Exodus 3:4) before God calls him to deliver the Jews from Egypt, and we also find this surrender in the New Testament. Ananias says:Behold, here I am, Lord (Acts 9:10) before God calls him to lay hands on the greatest persecutor of the time, Saul, and lead him to Jesus. At first Ananias was reluctant, but he had already given himself to ‘hineni ‘.
When obedience is spoken of in the Old Testament, it is always linked to obedience to the law. However, in the New Testament the word obedience is always linked to the obedience of faith; an adventure with the Holy Spirit. Jesus is God’s hineni . Jesus said:But not as I will, but as You will; Behold, here I am, send me.” Isaiah 65:1 says: “I was sought by those who did not ask for Me, I was found by those who did not seek Me. To the people who did not call on My name I said, Behold, here I am, behold, here I am.” This is one of the many examples in which God first completely surrenders Himself to you and me with the word ‘hineni ‘. The key to our surrender to God is found in the fact that He first surrendered to us.
Last Sunday I spoke at Heartbeat’s Transformed Meeting. During the song ‘Lord send revival’ I was greatly touched and brought to my knees by the Holy Spirit. God’s desire is a revival in the Netherlands and He wants to use you and me for that. But the question is; what may it cost you? Do you dare to buy without looking with God? God desires such a relationship with you and with me. A relationship based on complete trust. A relationship where you sign your name before you even know what it will be. A road that often starts disastrously when you realize what you said yes to and what a mess it is. But just like the program, there is an architect and stylist in one to build the Kingdom through you; the Holy Spirit. Do you dare to say ‘ hineni ‘?
