A swipe from the pan

As I write this I am in Suriname. We had a wonderful stay at ‘Lob Makandra’, a home for children and adults with disabilities. It is not just a nice trip to distant Suriname. We also do very important work here. However…God has shown me something that puts the important work I am doing into perspective. Although it is confrontational, I want to share what God said to me today… We can share the beautiful work in the Netherlands, on which so much blessing rests, here in Suriname. I can teach Christians here in Suriname, so that they can build a Part-time School in Suriname themselves. That’s really important! We are going to organize a children’s workers’ day for more than 50 children’s workers in Suriname. This encourages them and allows them to share what they have learned from us with children. Children will get to know Jesus better and a new generation can rise up and make Jesus more and more known in Suriname. That’s really important! A week later we will also organize a teenager and youth worker day. We hear from youth workers here that there is a lot of brokenness among young people in Suriname. What a blessing we can be if we can equip and help these leaders to make God’s Kingdom visible among this target group. That is also very important! We go to a prison to encourage, we appear on radio and TV to make people aware of our important work. On Sundays we will speak in different churches. We are going to organize another big service, where we will pray for healing and deliverance, because that is also very important! While I’m musing about our important work, I look out over a street of the home. I see a girl in a wheelchair there. I see she looks happy. She holds a broom in her hand. She is sweeping the streets. It is not very convenient, because it is quite difficult to sweep from a wheelchair. She has been working on it for a long time, but in the end it works. Suddenly I wake up from my reverie by a voice I recognize. The Voice calls my name. Martin Dol, He says. I know from experience that when He mentions my first and last name, He means business. God asks me a question. Martin Dol, do you really think your job is more important than what that girl is doing over there? I am looking for a beautiful and desirable answer, but deep in my heart I know what the truth is. I can’t help but think of the part about the poor widow who threw two coins into the offering box. Jesus’ judgment is clear. She has given more than anyone else. I look at the girl again. She looks up from her work and smiles kindly at me. I smile back, but I feel tears prickling. She could be doing more important work than me… I’m going to do the dishes now… because that’s important. When he looked up, he saw the rich coming to throw their gifts into the offering box. He also saw a poor widow throw in two coins, and he said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others. For the others gave some of their abundance, but she out of her poverty gave all that she needed for her sustenance.” (Luke 21:1-4)
